EFF files amicus brief in support of enforcing the Privacy Act

The Electronic Frontier Foundation filed an amicus brief in support of an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit, that seeks to enforce privacy protections afforded under the federal Privacy Act on behalf of two plaintiffs who are alleged to have been wrongly surveilled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The EFF said it is critical to enforce protections of the Privacy Act in this case. The brief states, “Unfortunately, by misinterpreting the Act’s exception for ‘authorized law enforcement activity,’ the Federal Bureau of Investigation . and other federal law enforcement agencies erroneously assert a prerogative to retain any piece of information about First Amendment activity that could potentially have a future law enforcement use.â€�Full Story
