Platforms ask for consultation process before finalizing social media laws

Social media platforms have asked the Indian government to hold a consultation process with stakeholders before finalizing amendments to the information technology rules for social media, BloombergQuint reports. Twitter Global Vice President of Public Policy Colin Crowell called for a “carefully crafted balance� between security and free expression and added that the process “should not be solely with the largest companies in the space but with a variety of stakeholders — both in industry and civil society.� Draft amendments would require social media platforms to identify and curb unlawful content, as well as for “intermediaries� to track originators of information upon government request.Full Story
